What Is IP65? What IP Rating Do Outdoor LED Walls Need?

In the world of outdoor LED walls, there are two questions that people in the industry are most concerned about: what is IP65, and what IP rating is required for outdoor LED walls? These issues are important as they relate to the durability and protection of outdoor LED walls that are often exposed to harsh weather conditions.

So, what is IP65? Simply put, IP65 is a rating that describes the degree to which an electronic device or enclosure is protected against dust and water.  ”IP” stands for “Ingress Protection” followed by two digits. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against dust or solid objects, while the second digit indicates the degree of protection against water.

IP65 specifically means that the enclosure or device is completely dust-tight and resistant to low-pressure water jets from any direction. This is a fairly high level of protection and is usually required for outdoor LED walls.

But what appropriate IP rating is required for an outdoor LED wall? This question is a bit complicated because it depends on a variety of factors. For example, the exact location of the LED wall, the type of enclosure used, and the expected weather conditions all play a role in determining the necessary IP rating.

In general, outdoor LED walls should have an IP rating of at least IP65 to ensure adequate protection against dust and water. However, in areas with particularly severe weather conditions, a higher rating may be required. For example, if an outdoor LED wall is located in a coastal area where saltwater spray is common, a higher IP rating may be required to prevent corrosion.

It’s also important to note that not all outdoor LED walls are created equal. Certain models may have additional layers of protection beyond the necessary IP rating. For example, some LED walls may use specially coating to prevent damage from hail or other impacts.

Ultimately, the IP rating required for an outdoor LED wall will depend on a variety of factors. However, as a general rule, an IP65 rating or higher is recommended to ensure adequate protection from dust and water.

As some application scenarios suffer more harsh weather or need special requirements, higher IP ratings for LED walls are demanded. For example, street furniture and bus shelter display often encounter dust accumulation as they are usually installed along the streets. For convenience, administrators tend to flush the displays with high-pressure water jets in some countries. Hence, it is necessary for those outdoor LED screens to rate IP69K for higher protection.
